Bad Newz box office: Vicky Kaushal eyes biggest opening of his career, film’s advance sales are higher than Sarfira’s entire day one haul

Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk-starrer Bad Newz is releasing in theatres on Friday, and the early box office projections suggest that the romantic comedy could have a double-digit opening. The year 2024 hasn’t been great for Hindi films so far, with most releases having mediocre runs at the box office. Bad Newz is being bracketed with glossy star-driven films like Crew and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (TBMAUJ) which had a decent opening and managed to make over Rs 80 crore in their lifetime runs.
As per Pinkvilla, Bad Newz is expected to bring in Rs 9-10 crore on its opening day. In fact, the publication estimates that the film could have a Rs 30 crore weekend. Crew had an opening weekend of Rs 32.6 crore and TBMAUJ made Rs 26.52 crore. The publication reported that the film has already sold 51,000 tickets at national chains like PVR INOX and Cinepolis. Bad Newz has already collected Rs 2.67 crore in its advanced ticket sales, as per industry tracker Sacnilk, which is higher than Sarfira’s opening day collection (Rs 2.5 crore).

For Vicky Kaushal, this could be his biggest box office opener yet. The actor’s last release, Sam Bahadur, debuted alongside Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. Sam Bahadur opened with Rs 5.75 crore as opposed to Animal’s Rs 63.8 crore. His Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, which also starred Sara Ali Khan, made Rs 5.49 crore on opening day and went on to make Rs 88 crore during its run, as per Bollywood Hungama. So far, the biggest opener of Vicky’s career has been 2019’s Uri, which made Rs 8.2 crore on its opening day. The film eventually went on to make Rs 245.36 at the domestic box office and established Vicky as a movie star.

Ammy Virk has only appeared in a few Hindi films, but he has a strong fan following in Punjab, which will potentially benefit the film’s collection in the north. Triptii, who got tagged as the ‘national crush’ after Animal’s release last year, is witnessing her first theatrical release after her newfound success. Before this, she has played lead roles in films like Laila Majnu, Qala and Bulbbul.
